The New York Times is seeking a Manager of Strategy to join the Strategy & Development department. The Strategy group is a small, high-impact team that partners with the CEO and senior executives to tackle the most critical challenges and the most attractive opportunities facing the company.
The Manager will be one of two direct reports into the Director of Strategy, Digital Product & Technology. Working with colleagues throughout the company, the Manager will lead or support individual strategy projects aimed at maximize The Times’s digital audience, revenue and profit over the next 1-3 years.
The Manager will closely partner with company leadership in the Digital Product & Technology department to:
- Set compelling digital product strategies for The New York Times
- Lead major strategy projects / engagements, often including large cross-functional teams
- Independently recommend business solutions that are both data-driven and actionable
The ideal candidate for the position will have 3-4 years’ experience in management consulting, or the equivalent, some of it as Project leader / Engagement Manager. However, candidates who have demonstrated leadership, excellence and the ability to thrive in demanding and relatively unstructured environments are also highly encouraged to apply — particularly if they have experience in advertising, marketing, technology, product or journalism. An MBA or equivalent experience is recommended though not required.
Recommended skills / characteristics include the following:
- Ability to apply high-level strategic frameworks to analyze and present data
- Ability to communicate ideas, objectives and results to colleagues and internal clients
- Ability to manage large strategic modules, working with clients and colleagues
- Ability to independently assess data and create financial models, strategic frameworks and PowerPoint presentations — at a level on par with the top-tier management consultancies
- Deep interest and understanding of competitive and technological challenges facing the entire media industry, and NYT in particular
- Passion for The New York Times
