Data Science Intern Job (New York City, NY, US)

The New York Times is seeking a Summer Technology Intern to join DS&E (Data Science & Engineering) team.

The Times seeks Data Scientist Interns to join a growing Data Science Group applying machine learning methods to meet this challenge, working in close collaboration with working partners in the newsroom as well as business and product. This intern will be charged with gathering, validating, communicating, and learning from the abundant data generated in the course of operations of The New York Times, including data describing how our readers engage with our diverse products.

What You’ll Do…

As a DS&E intern, you’ll be responsible for the following, and more:
- Reframe newsroom audience development objectives as machine learning tasks that can deliver actionable insights and accurate predictions.
- Execute machine learning research with reliability and reproducibility.
- Communicate results and impact to newsroom stakeholders.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to “productionalize” your research.
- Educate stakeholders and communicate the benefits of machine learning at The Times.

Who Should Apply…

You have a desire to join the world's most important journalism company at a moment in history when the importance of learning from our data is transforming every aspect of the craft and practice of journalism.

Recommended skills / characteristics include the following:
- Masters, PhD or 4+ years experience in computer science, applied mathematics, or other quantitative / computational discipline.
- 2+ years experience with open source machine learning tools built in Python or R.
- 2+ years experience with scripting languages (e.g., Ruby, Perl, Bash)
- Data engineering experience, including SQL and manipulating large structured or unstructured datasets for analysis.
- Preferred: experience with MapReduce/Hadoop and related technologies (e.g., Pig, Hive, Cascading). Familiarity with MapReduce or Elastic MapReduce a plus.
- A passion for empirical research and for answering hard questions with data.
- Proven record of solving challenging problems in academia and/or industry.
- Eagerness to collaborate with both technical colleagues and non-technical ones in the editorial, product management, marketing, and executive leadership spheres.
- Ability to gauge the complexity of machine learning problems and a willingness to try simple approaches for quick effective solutions.

The Gritty Details…
- This is a paid 10 week internship, 40 hours a week
- Start date is early June to mid August
- Location is The New York Times headquarters in midtown Manhattan
