The New York Times is looking for a talented technologist to join our E-Commerce and Marketing Technology team as a Technical Architect. We partner and work very closely with various technology groups within the organization and our software powers the Marketing & Care business with a keen focus towards our customers. You will be responsible for designing innovative solutions by integrating third party solutions with systems developed in-house by multilple development teams. As a Technical Architect, you will be responsible for overseeing the overall system architecture across the development teams. This team operates using an Agile delivery methodology, which you may need to lead from time to time on specific projects. The Technical Architect role assumes the responsibility for technical solutions will need to support these solutions when deployed in production.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years experience of hands-on building and architecting web applications
- Expert level understanding of modern software development methodologies and frameworks
- Strong experience integrating systems using secure web services
- Proficient creating system architect documentation
- Experience setting up development processes with tools such as Git/SVN, Maven, Puppet, Ansible, Hudson/Jenkins or equivalent
- Strong Java and PHP
- Strong knowledge of data structures and algorithms and principle of object oriented design
- Deep understanding of web application caching strategies
- Experience setting up and configuring web servers such as NGINX, Apache, Varnish, or HAProxy
- Experience designing JSON based RESTful Web Services
- Strong experience building relational databases - Mysql, Oracle
- Experience in Unix environment and shell scripting
- Experience with NoSQL databases (Mongo, Redis, Cassandra) is a plus
- Working knowledge of search engine such as Elastic Search is a plus
- Experience in Digital Marketing domain working on campaign management and content management tools is a plus
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent / higher experience
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with developers, product managers, and project managers to design solutions for business problems
- Provide technical direction and evaluating the quality of deliverable
- Lead developers for delivery of specific projects
- Hands on implementation of solutions along side development teams
- Ability to work independently and delivering on agreed upon timelines
- Ensure applications are developed with sufficient unit test coverage
- See all changes through to production deployment
- Lead peer reviews of code
- Learn and understand when to use services available from other teams
Basic Qualifications:
- 8+ years of overall experience
- Minimum 2 to 3 years of Hadoop administration experience
- Minimum 5 years in *nix systems engineering with recent experience in Linux
- Willingness to learn, experiment and research new technologies and use cases
