The New York Times is seeking an experienced, senior-level engineer to complement its Tools and Services Delivery team. The qualified candidate must demonstrate significant knowledge of Linux systems administration and be able to showcase a number of high-profile initiatives that couple fundamental disciplines with large-scale business requirements. As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer for The Paper of Record, you must be confident in designing high scale systems that reach millions of readers worldwide.

A Senior Infrastructure Engineer is an individual whose career to date exhibits progressively increasing responsibility and who can speak authoritatively on a variety of technical matters. The candidate must be capable of debating the merits of any technical project he or she is involved in, but also be willing to carefully consider alternative viewpoints and prioritize accordingly. The successful candidate must therefore possess effective communications skills in addition to technical prowess.

Roles & Responsibilities:
- Take ownership of select high-profile, mission critical tools and services.
- Work closely with colleagues in support of their initiatives, as well as your own.
- Deliver infrastructure components to an operations team, and provide training and support where necessary to ensure they can effectively manage them.
- Liaise with development groups to understand their projects and help design an infrastructure that facilitates their goals.
- Work closely with your supervisor and project manager to ensure your efforts are pertinent and feasible.
- Periodically review existing infrastructure for areas of improvement and take the initiative when prudent and necessary.
- Review emerging technologies and consider their implementation as they mature.
- Produce high-quality documentation for all proposed and delivered works.

Requirements:
- At least ten years of experience in Linux systems administration and engineering or architecture. Intimate knowledge of the Red Hat family is highly desirable, however other prevalent distributions or operating systems in the Unix family will be considered.
- Demonstrable knowledge of the fundamentals: DNS, DHCP, SMTP, SSH, LDAP, file systems, permissions, access controls, logging, configuration, sockets and networking.
- Reasonable experience with supporting technologies, including but not limited to version control systems (Git / SVN), Continuous Integration (e.g. - Jenkins), and configuration management (e.g. - Puppet).
- Advanced scripting capabilities in at least one of Bash,ksh,Zsh and ideally also one or more of the following: Perl, Python, Ruby.
- Strong understanding of a basic multi-tier architecture, including how the components interact and how they are scaled. The candidate must be able to effectively discuss systems that span continents as readily as those that coexist in the same rack.
- Must show experience in designs that deliver high availability and disaster recovery.
- Extensive focus on security, including but not limited to systems hardening, defensive measures, post-incident recovery and and root cause analysis.
- Significant understanding of monitoring and metrics gathering, including data-driven analysis and decision making.
- Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g. - VMWare, KVM, Xen); ideally, also with a cloud-based counterpart such as Amazon Web Services.
- Maintain the highest standards of ethics, integrity and professionalism.
