This position offers the opportunity to get hands-on with the core platform systems that The New York Times owns, working alongside a dynamic team that consists of various skillsets, experience and backgrounds.
The successful candidate is a core technologist who has a combination of strong expertise in dealing with highly scalable cloud platforms and the ability to collaborate with various Infrastructure teams to realize our shared vision of expanding the current platform to embrace new open-source private cloud technologies, thus delivering a solid platform that dynamically scales to meet the demands of our business.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Deploy and run a multi-datacenter, distributed cloud platform working together with colleagues across Infrastructure, Operations and Application teams.
- Assessment, capacity planning of the cloud platform and ability to develop the supporting tools/dashboards required to monitor and measure trends, critical components within the environment.
- Self-disciplined, results-oriented work ethic and the capacity to execute and deliver projects on time to meet business needs.
- High value placed on strong team dynamics, ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with core storage, network and application teams.
- Work on architecture roadmap development and emerging technologies.
- Document solutions as part of transition from design to implementation and operations.
- Bring in fresh ideas, new way of doing things, new tools to improve the overall efficiency of the platform.
Requirements
- Strong Linux/Unix skills including OS management, advanced troubleshooting of underlying storage and network components.
- Core competency in provisioning and managing a VMware and/or KVM-based hypervisor solution(s) in a large-scale multi-datacenter environment.
- Strong skill set in deploying Openstack or similar private cloud management technologies in a medium to large scale environment.
- Solid understanding of resilient, distributed datacenter architecture, POD-based design and network topologies that support a scale-out architecture.
- In-depth, advanced performance troubleshooting skills related to compute, storage and networking in a large-scale virtualized environment.
- Experience with or knowledge of configuration management and deployment systems such as Puppet, Jenkins, Git, Kickstart and similar tools.
- Working experience with automation and orchestration using scripting languages such as Perl, Python, Ruby, REST and shell scripts.
- Experience with monitoring/visualization tools such as Nagios, Cacti, Collectd, Statsd and Graphite.
- Strong documentation and organization skills.
Nice to have:
- Understanding of application workflow (or layer 7) such as, but not limited to, TCP/IP, HTTP/S, Load Balancing, SSH, Apache, etc...
- Conceptual understanding of modern, distributed architecture and API management.
- Good understanding of security concepts (Log management, Cryptography, Data Protection and encryption, Network security and firewall)
- Working knowledge of Load Balancers such as F5 and Netscaler.
- Working knowledge of distributed, software-defined storage technologies such as Ceph, Swift, GlusterFS or similar.
- Understanding of Scrum and agile methodologies.
