Job Title: Financial Analyst
Department: NEWS DEPARTMENT

Reports To: Senior Manager, Newsroom
POSITION: A financial analyst responsible for preparing and analyzing financial and statistical reports for department management and senior executives. Assist in the preparation of monthly financial reports of operations, budgets, and forecasts.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Perform monthly closings and variance analyses: prepare and review journal entries, variance analyses and review general ledger to assure News Department expenses are properly recorded.
- Communicate with newsroom departments to understand, research, and report on all financial issues.
- Prepare capital expenditure requests and budgets in coordination with newsroom departments, and review monthly accruals and forecasted capital spending.
- Develop monthly reporting packages for newsroom management.
- Analyze and evaluate the adequacy of News Department balance sheet accounts.
- Monitor, analyze and report on News Department spending, including in-depth analysis of foreign and domestic bureau accounting and budget variances.
- Counsel and assist News Department staff in adherence to administrative and financial policy
- Act as a liaison to the Financial/Systems Department to assist in the training and implementation of on-going financial projects.
- Coordinate with Financial Department and Payroll in particular to resolve any discrepancies, recommend and implement changes where necessary.
- Respond to internal and external ad-hoc requests as assigned.

EXPERIENCE
A degree in accounting or finance required. CPA and/or advanced degree is strongly preferred. Minimum four years of accounting, budgeting, and financial experience. Public accounting and operational analysis experience a plus. Must demonstrate ability to operate effectively in a team environment. Shows history of applying strong thinking, communication, and analytical skills to business needs. Strong computer skills including Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications are required. ESSBASE/HYPERION and PeopleSoft knowledge a plus.
