Software Engineer, User Generated Content Job (New York City, NY, US)

Job Description

Every year our readership posts millions of comments to nytimes.com. And, through a cutting-edge combination of data science and human moderation, The Times’ community team works to ensure that every discussion is vibrant, civil and substantive. As a member of the User Generated Content team, you will have a unique opportunity to contribute at every level of the technical stack to the many interesting systems that facilitate The New York Times’ online community.

As a contributor to these systems, you’ll have the opportunity to get into the nitty gritty of the entire stack from semantic analysis of content submissions all the way to threading display models, hierarchy representation in the database, and much more. Most importantly, you will get to work with some of the smartest engineers working in this space. If you are intrigued, we’d love to chat with you.

Responsibilities:


- Build, maintain and enhance both front and back end systems for handling submission, moderation and aggregation of every comment on nytimes.com.

Requirements:

- Proven experience (1-3 years or more) in developing software systems.

- Knowledge of multiple aspects of Computer Science including but not limited to: concurrency, data storage, distributed computing and processing, algorithms, security, etc.

- Strong working knowledge of at least one or more of the following: Python, C, C++, Go, PHP, or Java.

- Knowledge of various design and concurrency patterns.

- Comfort working on the command line on Linux systems.

- An interest in quality journalism and furthering the core purpose of The New York Times.

Nice to Have:

- Formal Computer Science education (A Bachelors or a Masters degree)

- Experience deploying software applications at a massive scale.

- Ability to troubleshoot front end code (Javascript mostly but some HTML and CSS)

- Knowledge of Amazon Web Services or a similar cloud-based infrastructure

- Demonstrated interest in recent and emerging technology platforms:

- Data storage systems e.g. MySql, Cassandra, MongoDB

- Distributed consensus based systems such as etcd and Consul

- Queueing systems like beanstalkd, SQS, NSQ and RabbitMQ
