Opening for Product Design Lead, Mobile
We are looking for a seasoned designer to work on The Times's core news apps for iOS and Android, which collectively reach millions of readers each day. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional portfolio of visual design, particularly for mobile devices, and possess a passion for shaping the next generation of apps for phones, tablets and other emerging devices.
What You'll Do
- You'll help formulate, plan, and design The Times's suite of mobile products, including enhancements to and redesigns of our current apps and the design of new apps, particularly for emerging platforms.
- You will craft solutions that satisfy the demands of both our users and our journalism, and will represent design on multi-disciplinary teams with members from across the organization.
- Create prototypes to quickly visualize, sketch, and communicate solutions to complex design problems.
What We're looking For
- A minimum of three years of professional experience in design.
- Exceptional visual and typographic sensibility, paired with a knack for shaping efficient and effective interfaces.
- Experience designing mobile apps, particularly within the unique environment of a news/editorial product.
- A keen interest in mobile technology, particularly smartphones and tablets.
- Ability to animate or prototype interaction design behaviors, using tools such as After Effects, Quartz, or equivalent.
- Confidence and ability to work collaboratively with many stakeholders from across The Times's organization, including editorial, business, and technology.
- Ability to synthesize the needs of multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to conceive and execute all aspects of the design process, and work well with other designers, developers, and producers.
- Be curious, sharp, and aware; steadfast in defense of both the user experience and the editorial brand, but flexible in managing and balancing technical and business requirements.
- In addition to exhibiting excellent skill and taste in design/user experience, he/she must be curious, thoughtful, collaborative, personable, organized, attentive to detail and possess strong verbal and presentation skills.
- Original, flexible, critical thinkers who communicate and collaborate well with a wide range of contributors will thrive.
Team members are expected not only to make exceptional contributions to the design of our products, but to engage with others to foster an environment of learning and constructive dialogue about our work.
- Enthusiasm — for designing and making great products and experiences, for current events and The New York Times — is essential.
- The ideal candidate will have experience building elegant mobile experiences, and possess a well-rounded portfolio that includes examples of smart UX work for fairly complex applications.
What You'll Get
- The opportunity to work alongside smart and talented journalist and make significant contributions to the digital vision of an iconic media organization.
- A competitive salary and benefits w/insurance including Medical, Dental, Vision, and 401k.
- Tuition reimbursement for continuing education.
- Work in a beautiful building with copious amounts of natural light.
- A passionate creative team that cares for each other.
