The New York Times is looking for a Linux system administrator who will implement and administer our on-premise Hadoop cluster as part of our long-term big data strategy. We are looking for a person who is a quick learner and already has a systems background. The person will work closely with our Data Solutions, Systems and Applications teams. This is a great role for someone who wants to work with exciting, cutting edge technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implementation and ongoing administration of Hadoop infrastructure
- Initial and ongoing cluster tuning and optimization
- Design, implementation and assignment of security schemas
- Templating deployments with Puppet
- Cluster maintenance, creation and removal of nodes
- Hadoop ecosystem support and maintenance (HDFS, Zookeeper, YARN, Spark, Storm, Solr, HBase, Pig, Hive) as well as eventually other big data technologies such as ElasticSearch, NoSQL DBs, etc
- Cluster monitoring and troubleshooting
- Installation of operating system and system updates, patches, version upgrades per vendor recommendations
- Experience with monitoring tools such as Nagios
- Working experience with scripting languages such as Python, Perl and others.
- Understanding of underlying infrastructure components including network, storage and server cluster design and implementation
- Solid knowledge of and experience with Red Hat-based Linux distributions
- Other system administration functions as needed
Basic Qualifications:
- 8+ years of overall experience
- Minimum 2 to 3 years of Hadoop administration experience
- Minimum 5 years in *nix systems engineering with recent experience in Linux
- Willingness to learn, experiment and research new technologies and use cases
