Newsroom Analytics Manager Job (New York City, NY, US)

The New York Times is seeking an Analytics Manager to join our Consumer Insight Group, which is responsible for research and analytics for all New York Times offerings, including the newspaper and NYTimes.com. The successful candidate will become a key, dedicated and embedded partner to the Newsroom Audience Development team at NYT, with a specific focus on analytics to support the audience growth and engagement strategy on NYTimes.com (including web, mobileweb and apps), exploring how to reach more readers, and increase their engagement with the NYT. The Newsroom Analytics Manager will partner with the newsroom, SEO and social specialists to deliver insight into the audience, identify opportunities and measure the impact of audience development initiatives.

Responsibilities:

- Use data and analytics to understand the New York Times audience and their behavior in terms of engagement, search and social media interaction
- Liaise with Newsroom editors and producers to understand editorial and audience questions, and generate insights that inform Newsroom practices.
- Work with business, technology, and editorial partners to optimize our tracking & reporting capabilities for audience engagement and growth, including social and organic search.
- Design, maintain and generate reports to monitor and assess the performance of audience growth and engagement tactics.
- Define, execute and analyze experiments (A/B, MVT) to measure increases in audience driven by new onsite and offsite tactics.
- Extend audience development analytics across all digital products and platforms, including the new digital products.
- Influence internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization to take action based on insights generated to seize business opportunities
- Present findings to team members and newsroom staff

Requirements:
- 5+ years of relevant experience working in web / digital / mobile analytics or in web-based businesses.
- 3+ years experience in developing or analyzing social media, SEO or engagement strategies. Experience in using analytics to measure and optimize growth and engagement of new audiences.
- Newsroom experience or a journalism background is highly regarded
- Knowledge of the social media ecosystem – platforms, strategies and business models
- At least 2 years of experience implementing and reporting on Google Analytics; and/or a Google Analytics certification
- 3+ years work experience using SQL is required
- Additional programming languages (e.g. Python) are necessary
- Experience with distributed data processing system, such as Hadoop/MapReduce, Hive, Pig and SQL/NoSQL databases
- Experience with defining, implementing and analyzing A/B and multivariate experiments is a plus
- Strong communication skills – written and verbal presentations
- Strong business acumen to understand corporate strategy, interact with clients and present actionable findings.
- Excellent conceptual and analytical reasoning competencies
- Degree in an analytical field such as economics, mathematics, or computer science is desired.
- Familiarity with NYTimes.com and/or The New York Times newspaper.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment
- A top-notch sense of humor
