Job Description:

The Times seeks a Data Scientist to join a rapidly growing data science practice and help guide business, engineering, and editorial decisions in a dynamic and rapidly-changing marketplace.

Responsibilities
- Reframe business, product, and editorial objectives as machine learning tasks that can deliver actionable insights and production software algorithms.
- Execute your machine learning research with reliability, reproducibility, and intelligent choices of tools and models.
- Furnish research results to scientific, business, and editorial stakeholders.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to implement your research and further The Times’ mission and business needs through intelligent software.
- Educate stakeholders and communicate the benefits of machine learning research at The Times.

Technical Qualifications
- PhD or 4+ years experience in computer science, applied mathematics, or other quantitative/computational discipline.
- 2+ years experience with open source machine learning tools: Python/scikit-learn or R.
- 2+ years experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Ruby, Perl, Bash) for orchestration and data manipulation
- Data engineering experience, including SQL and experience manipulating structured and unstructured data sources for analysis.
- Preferred: experience with MapReduce/Hadoop and related technologies (e.g., Pig, Hive, Cascading). Familiarity with Amazon Web Services and Elastic MapReduce a plus.

- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- A passion for empirical research and for answering hard questions with data.
- Proven record of solving challenging problems in academia and/or industry.
- Eagerness to collaborate with both technical colleagues and non-technical ones in the editorial, product management, marketing, and executive leadership spheres.
- Sufficient experience with open source machine learning tools (Python/scikit-learn or R) to select the right tool for the right job.
- Ability to gauge complexity of machine learning problems and know when simple solutions are the right ones.
