Sr. Software Engineer, Mobile Backend (Scala, Java, AWS) Job (New York City, NY, US)

Job Description:

The NYT Mobile Team is looking for a Software Engineer to help us build the next generation of our server-side API. The API is implemented as a set of distributed services written in Scala using Finagle. It is expected to handle large bursts of traffic during breaking news events, mostly from our native apps.

As a member of a small, agile team, your responsibilities will include implementing and deploying distributed server-side applications, automated build and test tools, as well as an occasional foray into mobile app development. Our primary development language is Scala, but expect working with multiple languages and platforms, e.g. Python, Go, Java, Groovy, Objective-C or Swift. You will be working closely with Android and iOS engineers, as well as other teams within the company.

Required
- Strong programming and analytical skills
- Expertise in modern concurrent programming techniques
- Well versed in HTTP and related network protocols
- Scripting languages, e.g. bash or python

Desired
- Experience with functional programming
- Demonstrated ability to deploy and operate distributed fault tolerant systems
- Some familiarity with iOS and Android frameworks
- Load testing and tuning of network applications
- NIO, Netty, Finagle, Akka, Spray
