Data Visualization Engineer Job (New York City, NY, US)

Job Description:

The New York Times is looking for self-motivated data visualization engineers to design and develop our analytics tools and platforms.

Unlocking the power of data has been one of the New York Times’ top five company priorities, and the data engineering team is striving to empower our product managers and marketers by providing actionable insights through analytics tools.

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about data and who have extensive experiences in front-end development and analytics. You need to have an artistic mind to conceptualize, design and develop reusable data visualization applications. You will be constantly challenged to develop new high-impact visual applications to make data actionable and help democratize data throughout the company.

Responsibilities
- Lead the complete lifecycle of visual analytical applications - from development of mock-ups & storyboards to complete production-ready application.
- Develop rich interactive graphics, data visualizations of large amount of structured data, preferably in-browser.
- Help product managers and marketers solve problems by visualizing data to answer important product or customer related questions.

Requirements
- Ability to build what you design
- Passion for transforming large amount of data into compelling visual stories to facilitate analysis and decision-making.
- Advanced level proficiency in JavaScript & HTML5.
- Deep understanding of modern, user-facing Web development.
- Fluent in one server side language like Java, C/C++, PHP, Python, Perl.
- Experience with Data Visualization tools/toolkits like Tableau, D3, AngularJS, Node.js.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, ElasticSearch or similar technologies.
- Ability to work cross-functionally and collaboratively with multiple teams.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on work experience with JavaScript and front-end visualizations.
- Understanding of statistical methods, including statistical process control a plus
- BA, BFA, MFA in the following Fine Arts: Studio Art, Graphic / Visual Design, Visual Communications, or equivalent professional experience is preferred.

Skills that will give you an advantage over other candidates:
- Experience with visualization of real-time data.
- Experience with Hadoop or similar distributed computing and storage platforms
