Job Description:
The director of Data Solutions will be responsible for executing the vision of the New York Times – to unlock the power of data and to foster a data-driven culture.
The New York Times is transitioning from a traditional publishing company into a digital products company, and we have made significant investments into building a world- class data engineering group to ensure that we are well positioned for the opportunities and challenges of the digital era. We are looking for strong candidates with excellent business proficiencies and deep technical knowledge in the analytics space to carry out this mission.
This position will lead the technology team to design and develop sustainable business intelligence data architecture, and provide various “data products” internally to product managers and marketers.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Assist business users across all functional areas in identifying long-term, strategic data needs for the enterprise. Define how the data is related to the business processes and developing a conceptual and functional model of the data.
- Lead data architecture for various layers of data warehouse and oversee the development and operations of big data database platforms.
- Design and executive on strategic direction for the data warehouse environment.
- Lead the design and support the deployment of the data warehouse architecture, including:
- Data repositories, tools and archiving strategy and processes.
- Reporting and information delivery environments, tools and techniques.
- Data acquisition, transformation and delivery environments, ETL tools and techniques.
- Metadata environment and data dictionary.
Responsibilities
- Minimum 7 years of experience in data modeling and data architectural development methodology.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in ETL tools such as Pentaho Kettle/PDI or Talend.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in leading technical team(s) on data analytics related projects.
- 1 to 2 years of experience with Amazon EC2/EMR, Amazon Redshift or any MPP databases, Hadoop, HIVE/Pig, NoSQL databases is required.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and familiarity with Agile methodologies.
- Ability to work in a team centered, collaborative environment.
- Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast paced environment.
- Experience with on BI reporting tools such as Tableau, Pentaho Analyzer or Business Objects is highly desirable.
- Master's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field preferred.
