Job Description:
The New York Times is seeking an experienced developer to join its newsroom interactive team. This person will be expected to work with reporters, editors, graphic editors and other developers to find new ways to enhance The Times’s storytelling online.
Think of this team as a startup within a large newsroom: You’ll have creative freedom to explore new ways of presenting news and information. That means non-linear storytelling by building new tools and platforms, searchable databases, crafting user-generated experiences and other dynamic means of presenting the news and the stories behind the news.
We are seeking an outstanding coder, experienced with one of the modern web development frameworks (preferably Ruby on Rails). But we also want someone who desires to do more than execute other people’s ideas. We want someone with the creativity to imagine new ways to tell stories and the ability to develop those ideas from conception through deployment.
Salary commensurate with experience.
Qualifications:
- Expert-level understanding of modern, user-facing Web development; including issues of infrastructure, scaling, security, data modeling and testing.
- Expert-level skill with with Ruby on Rails, Django or a comparable Web framework; familiarity with MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, ElasticSearch or similar technologies.
- Experience collecting, cleaning and/or analyzing large data sets.
- Participation in open-source projects and/or previous journalism experience is a big plus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
