The director of Data Solutions will be responsible for executing the vision of the New York Times – to unlock the power of data and to foster a data-driven culture.
The New York Times is transitioning from a traditional publishing company into a digital products company, and we have made significant investments into building a world- class data engineering group to ensure that we are well positioned for the opportunities and challenges of the digital era. We are looking for strong candidates with excellent business proficiencies and deep technical knowledge in the analytics and big data space to help us further our data mission around the company.
This position will lead the technology team in developing a scalable business intelligence data architecture, and provide various “data products” internally.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Assist business users across all functional areas company-wide in identifying long-term, strategic data needs for the enterprise.
- Define how the data is related to the business processes and develop a conceptual and functional model of the data.
- Lead data architecture for various layers of the data platform and oversee the development and operations of big data platforms.
- Design and execute on strategic direction for the data platform environment.
- Lead the design and support the deployment of new technologies in the data platform architecture, including:
- Data stores, data processing applications and data strategy and processes.
- Reporting and information delivery environments, tools and techniques.
- Data acquisition, transformation and delivery environments, ETL tools and techniques.
- Metadata environment and data dictionary.
- Data engineering for batch and real-time processing.
Responsibilities
- 7-10 years of experience in the data field.
- Knowledge of and a good understanding of the Lambda architecture.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in ETL and data processing.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in leading technical team(s) on data analytics related projects.
- 1 to 2 years of implementation experience of Hadoop and its ecosystem (knowledge of Hive/Pig, NoSQL databases is required).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and familiarity with Agile methodologies.
- Ability to work in a team centered, collaborative environment.
- Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast paced environment.
- Master's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field preferred.
