Senior System Administrator
The Senior Systems Administrator maintains the operations of server machines, core operating software, application performance, network connected storage, and connectivity between servers and the switches and routers. This position is responsible for the server’s uptime and availability, and must respond at all times and act quickly to resolve any problems that arise which jeopardize the client’s ability to interact with our products or an employee’s ability to interact with our systems. Has a comprehensive understanding of the organization's software and hardware systems. Anticipates, identifies and articulates problem areas and develops preventative solutions. Works with a high degree of independence on projects with little or no precedent and resolves complex problems. Guides and trains other support engineers.This position is part of a small but motivated team of professionals with focused responsibilities and broad opportunities for technology exposure.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor server machines and server software at all times, either through manual or automatic processes. Respond quickly to degraded system performance.
- Responsible for monitoring system security and for taking proper steps to prevent and detect security breaches.
- Troubleshoot system and network problems in systematic manner.
- Research new technical solutions.
- Proactively communicate system-related issues to management and the user community.
- Monitor every aspect of the server machines in order to identify opportunities for better system performance and elimination of recurring system problems.
- Manage all server machine resources, such as available computer disk space, and notify the Director of Operations whenever greater resources are required.
- Install new server software, including pre-installation benchmark testing, and quality control after installing.
- Assist with designing robust backup schedules and perform restorations.
- Manage email distribution lists.
- Maintain systems to the security and operational standards of the NYTimes Co.
- On a rotating basis serve as the on-call system administrator responding to critical problems.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent and 5 years or more of experience managing a medium or large size UNIX environment.
- Expert knowledge of at least one of the following: Linux, Solaris or other major UNIX OS. TCP/IP networking, firewall, sendmail, NFS, DNS, system utilities.
- Extensive experience with web server software such as Apache, Varnish, IIS, Tomcat and databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
- C, Java, shell scripts, and Perl programming experience preferred.
- Experience writing and maintaining tools for backend administration.
- Experience with configuration management frameworks such as Ansible or Puppet
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and deliver projects on time.
- Ability to maintain focus and perspective in a busy, time-critical production environment.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision and travel to where external servers are housed.
- Available for 24 hours on-call on a rotational basis.
