THE NEW YORK TIMES SYNDICATE/SERVICE IS SEEKING A
REGIONAL SALES MANAGER, US/CANADA region – New York
The New York Times Syndicate/News Service is seeking a Regional Sales Manager to join its global sales team. The position is based in New York and will report to the region’s Sales Director.
ROLE EXPECTATIONS AND CONTRIBUTIONS:
Sales/New Business Opportunities
- Responsible for working with editors, publishers, and commercial executives of the region’s most important media companies – print, online, digital, TV, etc. - and introducing them on an ongoing basis to content solutions and services from The New York Times Syndicate/News Service.
- Independently size market potential, including identifying prospects, leading sales calls, negotiating deal terms, closing the deal and implementing the deal. Ensure a consistent deal pipeline. Push deals to closure while protecting NYT and client brands and meeting goals.
- Proactively maintain and expand customer base by building and strengthening business relationships. Grow revenue by gaining a clear understanding of customer business needs and identify new opportunities while supporting NYT mission and goals.
Strategy/ Business Development
- Work with the region’s Sales Director, to create and implement a sales strategy.
- Travel regularly to visit with key clients and prospective clients face to face in a structured professional way.
- Communicate regularly with clients and prospective clients via phone and email, personal visits and at conferences to identify and anticipate their changing needs.
- Recommends new revenue growth opportunities by identifying new product opportunities, surveying customer needs and trends, tracking competitors, and researching and analyzing marketplace and trends.
- Work with region’s Sales Director to facilitate efforts with staff in New York office (Editorial Development, Marketing and Contract Operations) on matters related to specific deals to ensure consistent business practices and to support long term deal success.
- Work with operations team to ensure content delivery, marketing and editorial approval processes, and billing and administrative issues.
- Work with Regional Sales Director to review business proposals, size the market potential for each new deal, and present a strong rationale for selected candidate. Identify issues and provide recommendations for each candidate.
- Represent the Times at select regional conferences.
- Set up meetings with key clients and senior Syndication Sales management during regional visits and conferences. Work with region’s Sales Director to prioritize the team travel schedule throughout the year, including trips for senior management, in order to maximize revenue growth and meet division and client objectives.
- Serve as a point person on the global sales team for a specific product, tracking sales while being the point person for all things related to that product.
- Participate in regular regional team and global sales meetings to update the status of initiatives and to share best practices with colleagues and initiate conversations as needed to resolve any outstanding issues.
- Input all prospective clients and existing client information into Salesforce and other relevant databases.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, integrity-driven sales professional who approaches potential customers with the aim of winning new business, as well as maintaining good relationships and NYT values.
- Can work independently and demonstrates strong territory management skills. Regularly reviews own sales performance, aiming to meet or exceed goals.
- Understanding of the media industry specifically newspapers, magazines, and digital.
- Media sales experience with a proven record of creating and maintaining effective relationships with newspapers, magazines, web publishers and/ or other key online platforms.
- Demonstrated experience in prospecting and growing client lists with a proven track record of revenue growth and meeting sales goals.
- Must be able to research and analyze the marketplace and identify trends and new business opportunities that translate into solid prospects.
- Ability to maintain and grow existing relationships with both large and small accounts.
- Excellent verbal and writing communication skills in English. Spanish and other languages a plus.
- Motivated self-starter who updates job knowledge by participating in product training, educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks.
- Excellent relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic small-team environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and sales and database management tools (i.e., Salesforce)
- 4+ years of industry-related sales.
