Systems/Automation Engineer Job (New York City, NY, US)

The New York Times is seeking a motivated Systems and Automation Engineer in our Publishing Systems Department. This person will help us build infrastructure, automate processes and architect applications for supporting our publishing systems at The New York Times. The perfect candidate has a strong understanding of Linux and automated provisioning systems like Puppet, has a strong background in basic scripting languages, and experience with cloud-based virtualization (EC2, VMWare ESX).

He or she will participate in technical projects designed to enhance and maintain the performance, reliability, and functionality of the systems used in newsgathering, content creation, publishing, production and archiving operations for both our daily newspaper and our digital products. This person will also collaborate with other departments company-wide in order to provide a seamless publishing environment. A strong candidate is an individual who develops creative solutions to difficult challenges and can incorporate their ideas with those of others while excelling in a deadline-driven environment .

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Wear many hats: deployment and automation engineer, performance analyst, service architect, system/database administrator, capacity planner, tools developer, performance monitoring expert, project planner and technical evangelist for The New York Times news production systems.
- Work with and evaluate third party vendor products.
- Help build solutions from complex requirements and support the reliability of these solutions in production settings.
- Perform operation/production support, including incident management and root cause analysis of system and application failures and engineer solutions.
- Identify opportunities for improvement; design, develop and implement solutions by scripting to streamline manual tasks and/or to increase server and application reliability and performance.
- Manage systems and projects with little direction.
- Keep up-to-date on the latest technologies, relevant applications and tools and evaluate their application and/or challenges to our systems. Help introduce new technologies to improve our processes and products displaying flexibility and initiative to enhance production workflow and the ability to quickly learn multiple skills in an ever-changing environment.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Excellent understanding of the interworking of Linux kernels, and how the OS works with underlying storage systems, networking devices and database.
- Thorough understanding of systems automaton, deployment and systems management solution tools such as Puppet, SVN, Jenkins (or Hudson), Spacewalk, and Git is required.
- Understanding of LDAP and implementation on Unix based systems.
- Experience with scripting languages such as Perl, Python, and shell scripts. Ability to quickly write/execute scripts to extract data for developing requirements or troubleshooting.
- Basic knowledge of server virtualization (Amazon EC2 and VMWare ESX).
- Experience working with monitoring solutions such as Nagios.
- Familiarity with various methods of data migration and high availability, including data replication.
- Experience with web technologies and web programming is a plus.
- Some experience supporting Windows OS based applications and an understanding of Active Directory is a plus.
- Experience with agile project management and collaboration tools like Jira and Confluence is a plus.

EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline or equivalent experience with a minimum of seven years of experience in systems administration and application deployment.
- Four plus years of related technical and hands-on experience in UNIX systems administration and support, including VMware, Linux, web technologies and SAN attached systems.
- Three plus years of scripting language experience.
