The New York Times is seeking a Summer Technology Intern to join our personalization team.
What It’s All About…
The goal of the Personalization team is to continuously find ways to engage our readers by customizing their experience and helping them discover more of what interests them in what we have to offer, especially when it is content and services that are exclusive to the New York Times.
You'll work alongside one of our Data Scientists and the Personalization Engineering Manager to plan, design and implement a news content recommendation algorithm competition, similar to the Netflix Prize and Kaggle.com contests, with the NYT Engineering staff as participants.
What You’ll Do…
- Choose an appropriate dataset for the competition
- Frame the competition objective as a machine learning task
- Define an evaluation metric that will be used to rank submissions
- Break the dataset into a training set, an evaluation test set (to evaluate the initial submissions) and a final test set (which should root out overfitted solutions)
- Create a reference implementation for a naive recommendation algorithm to serve as a benchmark
- Bring it all together in a web interface that allows participants to make their submissions and get immediate feedback about their ranking
- Work with our InfoDev team to promote the competition amongst the entire Engineering staff
Who Should Apply…
You are very interested in using data to solve hard problems. You probably have already dabbled with machine learning at some point. You might have a computer science, engineering, statistics or an applied math background.
Recommended skills / characteristics include the following:
- Pursuing a four year Comp Sci degree or equivalent
- Experience with live and on-demand video is a plus.
- Top-notch problem solving skills and solid judgment
- Ideally you will have an interest in digital media
- Passion for the NYT
The Gritty Details…
- This is a paid 10 week internship, 40 hours a week
- Start date is early June to mid August
- Location is The New York Times headquarters in midtown Manhattan
- Tech interns get lots of great perks including food, local transportation and more…
