The New York Times is looking for a motivated data engineer to work closely with our editors, journalists and audience development team to help build an analytics data platform that helps our newsroom staff make better decisions.
The ideal candidate should be passionate about data, curious about how newsrooms work (experience working in newsrooms a plus) and have extensive experience working in web development and analytics

Desired Skills & Experience
- 3+ years of digital analytics experience
- Self-starter and ability to handle multiple competing priorities in an Agile environment.
- Extensive experience in JavaScript and other client-side technologies
- Experience developing dashboards and generating insights
- Excellent knowledge of data structures, algorithms and design patterns
- Excellent knowledge of data visualization libraries, such as D3, highcharts etc.
- Experience working with MVC based front-end libraries such as Angular JS
- Experience in building web applications in a Linux environment and handling or analyzing large volumes of data.
- Experience with distributed data processing system, such as Hadoop/MapReduce, Hive, Pig and SQL/NoSQL databases
- Experience working with tag management systems
- Knowledge of Google analytics
- Knowledge of working with content management systems
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
- Experience in product optimization or A/B testing is a plus
- Experience in machine learning is a plus
- Proficient in Excel
- Strong communication skills
- B.S or M.S in Computer Science or related fields preferred
Responsibilities
- Use data and analytics to understand the New York Times audience and their engagement
- Work with business and technology partners to provide reporting capabilities for audience engagement and growth
- Extend audience development analytics to the entire digital organization to enable cohesive data driven decisions
- Partner with front-end engineers to design and develop event-tracking mechanism based on web/app analytics projects.
- Design and develop SQL scripts and tools to serve specialized analytics requests.
- Work with data scientists and analysts to develop innovative techniques for capturing event driven data to enable real-time decision-making and response.
- Develop business critical data solutions
- Institute continuous integration methodologies as a part of solution design
