The New York Times is seeking a Summer Technology Intern to join the Search team.

What It’s All About…

The New York Times has one of the world's great archives, with millions of news articles from 1851 to the present. In order to make this amazing archive as useful as possible, The Times has made a centuries-long investment in high-quality metadata. Since the nineteenth century, we have manually tagged every article with the relevant people, places, organizations and subject headings.

What You’ll Do…

Now, in the twenty first century, we're actively exploring new techniques for making even better use of this incredible metadata. Chief among these techniques is linked open data, the art and science of identifying and sharing relationships between our tagging vocabulary and other data vocabularies (e.g. Wikipedia page names). We've developed systems for managing this information, but we want you to help us do a better job of sharing this data by revamping the public face of linked data at The Times, creating compelling prototypes and growing our trove of links. Evaluate current linked data offerings and propose enhancements. You will also create dynamic web applications in PHP, JavaScript, CSS and HTML.

Who Should Apply…

Our ideal candidate will be passionate about creating innovative prototypes, systems, standards and products from our amazing archival metadata. We are looking for someone with an innate curiosity and a passion for innovation and who has the ability to channel this passion into both individual and team projects.

Recommended skills / characteristics include the following:
- Pursuing a four year Comp Sci degree or equivalent
- Familiarity and ideally experience with web application development
- Ability to create dynamic web applications in PHP, JavaScript, CSS and HTML.
- Top-notch problem solving skills and solid judgment
- Ideally you will have an interest in digital media
- Passion for the NYT
