The New Products team at the New York Times is looking for an experienced mobile engineering manager to lead the high performing team responsible for the NYT Now app for the iPhone. NYT Now -- named App Store Best of 2014 by Apple -- is a modern news app that presents a curated guide to the news.
The New Products team is a small, multidisciplinary team of editors, designers, product managers and engineers focused on launching and growing new, high quality products within the organization. We are a team that cares deeply about the journalism of the New York Times, and works hard to build products that reflect those standards. Our engineers sit side-by-side with editors and designers and collaborate closely on new features. The team released two applications named App Store Best of 2014 by Apple, NYT Now and NYT Cooking.
As the engineering manager, you will report to the Director of Technology for New Products and lead a small, dedicated team of iOS and Web developers responsible for NYT Now. As the lead, you will be responsible for the end-to-end architecture and lifecycle of the app. We want someone with a track record of shipping solid mobile applications in a highly collaborative team environment.
Responsibilities
- Mentor a high performing team of iOS and Web developers responsible for the NYT Now iphone app and a custom CMS.
- Guide the team to use best practices in mobile software architecture and delivery
- Work with product managers, designers, and editors to balance priorities and drive the team toward shippable products
- Be a strong voice in strategic technical discussions
- Practice servant-leadership by picking up the least pleasant coding tasks
- Advocate for a collaborative team culture that empowers individuals
Requirements
- A strong technical background, including hands-on native iOS or web development experience (ideally both)
- Experience leading a mobile software development team through the process of building and releasing an app to the App store
- A team player who is able to work well across disciplines to move the product forward
- A strong product sense and the vision to translate product goals into high quality shippable code
