The ideal candidate is an excellent editor who is steeped in digital media and has used data to gain an understanding of reader habits, which can be used to help guide editorial strategy. The editor will distribute Times Opinion content on social media, finding innovative ways to engage with readers there and on The Times site. The editor will produce the daily section and generate project ideas. The candidate will have a minimum of 4 years’ experience at a major news site and enjoy working in a collaborative, competitive, fast-paced environment.
We are looking for someone who is:
- A passionate reader of news and opinion across digital media
- An excellent editor of visual and written forms of journalism, and a lively writer of display copy for deep reader engagement
- Active on social media sites and deeply aware of how people read on those platforms
- Comfortable with HTML
- Excited about data, analytics, and technology
- Highly organized and efficient; able to keep up with the fast-paced nature of news
- A follower of industry trends
- Comfortable working both in teams and independently
- Flexible and adaptable to the continuously changing nature of digital journalism
- Able to communicate with a variety of departments and disciplines
A sample of the main duties in this role:
- Produce the Opinion corner of the New York Times homepages and the Opinion section
- Produce the current and following day's report, with particular attention to SEO, visual optimization for the site and for social media and timeliness
- Ensure that the section on all digital platforms is up to date, dynamic and visually arresting
- Distribute articles in timely, innovative ways on social media platforms; find creative ways to engage with, and attract, readers there and on The Times site
- Conceive of and help execute reader-driven and editorial projects around the Opinion report and big news events, working with editors, designers and the audience development team.
- Use data to inform the department leadership about audience reaction to certain pieces helping guide distribution and publication strategies
- Investigate answers to questions raised by writers, editors, and the audience development team through the use of data
