Job Description:
The New Products team at the New York Times is looking for an experienced technology manager to lead the high performing team responsible for the NYT Now app for the iPhone. NYT Now, launched in April 2014 is an app designed to serve as “your guide to the news,” and was recently named App Store best of 2014 by Apple.
As the engineering manager, you’re essentially the CTO of a startup within the Times. You’ll be collaborating closely with product and project managers, editors, designers and engineers to identify, prioritize and implement new features for NYT Now. We want someone with a strong technical background, a keen sense of what makes a good product and a drive to get things done.
The NYT Now technical team is a small, interdisciplinary group of iOS and web developers responsible for the iPhone app and a CMS that powers it. We’re a team that cares greatly about both the quality of the product we ship and the technology that powers it. We’re comfortable with a messy creative process but also know how to be pragmatic and ship new products in a large organization.
Responsibilities:
- Mentor a high performing team of iOS and Web developers responsible for the NYT Now and NYT Opinion iphone apps and a custom CMS that powers them.
- Work with product managers, designers, and editors to balance priorities and drive the team toward shippable products
- Be a strong voice in strategic technical discussions
- Practice servant-leadership by picking up the least pleasant coding tasks
- Advocate for a collaborative team culture that empowers individuals
Qualifications:
- 2+ years experience recruiting and leading a team of developers focused on consumer-facing web or mobile applications
- A solid technical background, including hands-on native iOS or web development experience (ideally both)
- An interest in building web and mobile apps that goes beyond just the technical pieces
