The MySQL database administrator candidate will participate in the design, implementation, automation, optimization and ongoing administration of our current MySQL infrastructure and operations. Our MySQL DBA team works hard to deliver top-notch support for all of the New York Times' MySQL functionality, scalability, availability, performance and reliability for both in-house and cloud deployments.
Responsibilities:
Setup and maintain master-slave replication topologies for high-availability and read scaling.
Design and implement solutions in BASH to automate manual administrative tasks
Monitor performance and tune MySQL and Linux to optimize for different workloads
Maintain backups and perform point-in-time restorations
Work with developers to design and optimize SQL queries and schema to participate in application deployments
Serve in an on-call rotation as an escalation contact for critical database production issues and drive escalation/resolution of problems
Maintain and create documentation for HOWTOs, standards and best practices
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred
Minimum of 4+ years administering MySQL Servers with experience on MySQL v5.5 and v5.6
Technical Skills:
Knowledge of MySQL internals, InnoDB and MyISAM storage engines, MySQL Replication
Strong SQL tuning skills
Familiarity with MySQL backup and recovery strategies
Experience with database performance tuning and capacity planning
Proficient in working with Linux CentOS/RHEL
Scripting proficiency in BASH required. Python/Perl/Ruby a plus.
Puppet, Amazon EC2, Nagios experience is plus
Functional Skills:
Self starter and be able to perform work with minimal supervisory direction
Knowledge of data quality, data management and security best practices
Strong Oral and written skills. Able to communicate effectively and clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Ability to take ownership; to anticipate and handle critical situations.
Ability to thrive in fast-paced, but flexible and collaborative work environment.
