Executive Director, eCommerce Platform Job (New York City, NY, US)

Job Description:

Highly experienced manager with strong background in agile software development practices, e-commerce applications, and advanced technologies, including Java EE, relational and NoSQL databases, and Web architecture required to join the New York Times team to lead development of the next generation pay model platform. New York Times introduced paid subscriptions in 2011 and the project has since generated over 600,000 paid subscriptions. The role would require the candidate to lead a team of developers to analyze, design, and develop shared services for a flexible commerce platform based, when possible, on existing components. The platform is expected to support evolving business requirements and interface with a commercial financial backend. The implementation environment is Java EE and Linux. Job location is at The New York Times offices in New York City.

Qualifications:

- Strong object oriented development background, Java or C++
- Strong relational database background (Oracle, MySQL)
- Knowledge of NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra, etc)
- Knowledge of Search systems (ElasticSearch, SOLR, etc)
- Strong understanding of Web Services
- Strong knowledge of data structures and algorithms
- Experience leading an Agile development process required
- Experience building and leading engineering teams required
- Experience with billing, accounting, and financial systems preferred
- Excellent communication skills, must be able to define solutions and partner with other development teams on execution
- Formal Computer Science background

Responsibilities:

- Design and oversee development of solutions across multiple engineering teams
- Evaluate the end-to-end development lifecycle in the team constantly looking for ways to improve delivery
- Analyze evolving business requirements and design measurable solutions
- Work closely with product, project, and business stakeholders to ensure solutions meet their needs
- Ensure solutions are developed with sufficient unit test coverage
- Work closely with QA to iterate on bug fixes
- See all changes through to production deployment
- Learn and understand when to use services available from other teams
