Job Description:
The New York Times has an open position on our Platform team for an engineer who is familiar and comfortable with working on any area of software development. In other words, a generalist with a genuine interest in all the effort involved in iterating a software product towards completion within the constraints of cost, performance and quality.
Responsibilities:
- Primarily, support the development RESTful APIs on a virtualized/cloud environment and related back-end services.
- Work on our continuous integration process, either through improving test coverage, automating builds and deployments or partnering with the DevOps team towards that end.
- Keep up with the latest trends in relevant technology and share it with the team and the rest of the company.
If necessary, work on web-facing features and related client-side code.
- Actively participate during design and planning of product features.
- Improve the application design through a process of constant code review and assessment along with the rest of the team.
- Use quantitative and qualitative data to support implementation and feature definition.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience with server-side Javascript (Node.js), Python, Ruby or similar.
- 2+ years of experience with one or more JVM languages (Java, Scala, Clojure, etc).
- 2+ years experience with database/storage solutions (MongoDB, AWS DynamoDB, Cassandra, HBase, Riak, Couchbase, MySQL, Postgres, etc).
- 2+ years of experience with Unix/Linux DevOps work (shell scripting, Puppet/Chef, Apache/Nginx/HAProxy configuration, etc).
- 1+ years of experience with client-side code (Javascript, HTML, CSS).
Qualifications that will help you stand out:
1+ years of experience with distributed computing and messaging (Hadoop, EMR, Zookeeper, Spark, Storm, Kafka, RabbitMQ, etc).
Experience with machine learning and statistical modeling.
Experience with the Agile development process (Scrum, sprint planning, pair programming).
