Job Description:
The New York Times Company’s Research and Development lab is looking for a unique individual to serve as a Creative Technologist, responsible for designing and building prototypes that illustrate the impact of emerging technologies on news, media and information in the coming years. The ideal candidate will be highly imaginative and have both the ability and extensive experience in developing applications for the creation, manipulation, and consumption of information. We are looking for someone with innate curiosity and an ability to think creatively about the future; someone who generates inventive ideas and has the ability to render those ideas into working models. Our Creative Technologists work closely together in an open, collaborative environment where we iterate between idea and code quickly. If you want to learn about, design, and build the future all at the same time, this is your next gig.
Responsibilities:
- Deeply understand the New York Times Company’s mission and how this mission can be extended, enriched and supported by new applications and experiences
- Design, define and develop prototypes for innovative digital media products and services
- Stay abreast of the evolving technology and design landscape including the emergence of new standards, protocols and devices; regularly update senior management on marketplace trends and competitive issues
- Stretch the boundaries of our thinking about what media will become in the next 3 to 5 years and how people will use media for news, information and entertainment
- Participate in the development of other Creative Technologists’ projects where your skills are required
- Present our concepts of the near future to employees, customers, and outside groups
Requirements:
- Proven experience (3-5 years or more) in creating innovative user experiences and user interfaces. Previous experience with news applications (interactive storytelling, informational experiences, innovative presentations) is a plus. Commercial applications, interactive installations, and other creative development experience is also welcome.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred. Master degree or MFA/PhD is a plus.
- Proven track record of developing creative product concepts and communicating those concepts through the hands-on creation of working prototypes.
- Strong working knowledge of HTML5/JavaScript/CSS, and at least two or more of the following: Python, PHP, Ruby, Max/MSP/Jitter, Processing, Go, Objective C, or Java.
- A track record of achieving commercial or artistic success from creative technological endeavors is a plus.
